This October at All Saints’ we are going to be starting a new Alpha Course for 2017. My hope is that many of us who have never been on an ALPHA Course, or who haven’t been on an ALPHA Course for many years, will be able to come and experience the new resources that ALPHA have released in the last year. They really are excellent and have proved both challenging and inspirational.
With this in mind, we have decided to hold this year’s ALPHA as our Sunday Evening Service from October to mid December 2017. My hope is that this will allow many more people to come and experience ALPHA who are already part of the church family as well as also giving opportunity to invite friends and family and those who are asking questions about faith and the meaning of life and who are not so connected with All Saints’.
Our Sunday evenings from Sunday 1st October 2017 therefore will be slightly different. Instead of starting at 6.30pm we will start at 6.00pm with tea, coffee and cake. At 6.30pm we will start the ALPHA evening in church exploring different themes. After a 20 minute talk there will be time to ask questions in discussion groups. The evening will be finished by 8.00pm at the latest. Obviously we want to encourage people to come weekly but even if you can only make one or two we will be making sure there will be a guest discussion group for you to be part of.
During the ALPHA Course the following themes are covered using a question:
- Is there more to life than this?
- Who is Jesus? Why did Jesus die?
- How can I have faith?
- Why and how do I pray?
- Why and how should I read the Bible?
- How does God guide us?
- Who is the Holy Spirit?
- What does the Holy Spirit do?
- How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?
- How can I resist evil?
- Why and how should I tell others?
- Does God heal today?
- What about the church?
Having run ALPHA Courses for many years one of the wonderful things is seeing people ask their own questions however big, or however small. The other is that every time I have been part of an ALPHA course I have seen people’s understanding, faith and relationship with God grow. It is truly amazing to witness how God meets and deepens His relationship with people.
We will be giving out some invitation cards in September but as we build up to the ALPHA course may I encourage you to be thinking and praying who you could invite to the course. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and may He encourage you to boldly invite people. This year we also want to raise up and train group leaders for the ALPHA Course so please pray if this might be something you could get involved with.
If you would like to talk more about the ALPHA Course please do catch me at church or feel free to drop me an email to email@example.com.
I hope you have a refreshing summer and for some much needed holiday. As I sign off, my last prayer request is that you pray for the team heading out to Uganda on Thursday 17th August.
Every blessing in Christ,
Daniel Currie (Vicar)
