“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” – Galatians 5:1

Today we celebrate the witness of Janini Luwum.  Janini was the Anglican Archbishop of Uganda who spoke up for the oppressed and in 1977 was murdered by a brutal regime. He was aware of the danger to his life and had said, “… I live as though there will be no tomorrow… while the opportunity is there, I will preach the gospel with all my might and my conscience is clear before God.”

People and circumstances may impress themselves on us in such ways that clouds of uncertainty or fear may threaten to roll in and shade the light of Christ.  Nevertheless, we can resolutely resist and confidently stand in the knowledge that whoever or whatever may seek to constrain, we are eternally free.  Paul the apostle, who was no stranger to chains of imprisonment, says these words: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
