“Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, Jesus himself shared the same
things so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is
the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death.” – Hebrews 2:14
We are part of a generation who are fearful – we worry about our children’s safety, we worry about the threat posed by IS, we worry about finance or work and we fear illness or ageing. All the little fears that plague us are related to the central human fear of death. These verses from Hebrews that Jesus became one of us, shared the same things and felt the same emotions. We see him shrinking back from the Cross that lay ahead of him. Yet in his dying for the human race he destroyed the devil who had the power of death so that he could set us free from the fear of death and all those fears related to it.
Dr Donald Grey Barnhouse was an American Pastor whose first wife died when his
children were quite young. He was driving his children home from the funeral service.
Naturally they were overcome with grief and Dr Barnhouse was trying hard to think of
some word of comfort to give them. Just then, a huge truck overtook them. As it did so, its
shadow swept over their car and as it passed an idea came to him.
‘Children,’ he asked, ‘would you rather be run over by a truck or by its shadow?’
They replied, ‘By the shadow of course; that can’t hurt us at all.’
Dr Barnhouse replied, ‘Did you know that two thousand years ago the truck of death
ran over the Lord Jesus in order that only its shadow might run over us?’
Prayer: We thank you heavenly Father that because Jesus conquered death in his dying He can set us free from all the fears that threaten and imprison us. Amen.
